Matamoulana is a small, quiet village that stretches along sandy hills both from the eastern & western sides. From the northern & southern sides it is stretching along narrow valleys. It is located at 180 km from Nouakchott, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, at some 50 km, south east of the main paved road referred to as "Route de l'ESPOIR" Founded in 1958, by the late Mohamed Mishry, Matamoulana is relatively new. Its geographical extension and global development are somewhat indicative of the future status of the village with already 2000 full time dwellers and growing fast MATAMOULANA STANDS FOR HARMONY Home for a great many different tribes that would otherwise have their own territory, considerations of a spiritual nature have managed to unite them under common objectives: Education , progress, social, economic, intellectual and spiritual. This kind of open mindedness is materialized by the will to listen to others and exchange, on anything and everything, providing it proves useful for the advancement of the community, in particular and mankind, in general. In order to cultivate this kind of harmony that is so hard to come by nowadays, the village is thus keeping its distance from political & tribal considerations INFRASTRUCTURES A proper runway for small carriers (for special missions and occasions) is also under study. As far as transportation to and from Nouakchott (and Rosso) is concerned, regular 4WD vehicles are available, on a daily basis. A wireless transceiver radio system takes care of global communication needs, definitely and forever disenclosing the village. CULTURAL ACTIVITIES They are based on collective effort, educational, scientific and otherwise. The regular and Koran schools teach dozens of children issued from the village, from urban centers as well as neighboring countries. Often, immigrant children (and adults) chose to come to the village to learn, in a healthy, serene environment that is most conducive to the acquisition of knowledge. These cultural activities, involving several associations based upon age groups organize the social life of the village. Some them even have regular publications, while others are directly involved in the world of development, participating in NGO activities, both in Mauritania and abroad. GENERAL ACTIVITIES There is always something to do in the
village. All young & old, men & women work together to achieve
the global community objectives. Sometimes, such mundane tasks are
performed, as removing sand from houses, cleaning the streets. At
other times, it is working on the extension of the water & electricity
networks or on the extension of the mosque as is the case right now.
The same think applies to farming, medical and other activities, when
it is regarded as a priority for the whole of the village. People
find their strength in unity; this makes it easy for people to participate.
